About Anastasio Hernandez Rojas’
Hernandez Rojas’ story is not uncommon. He had been brought to the United
States when he was fifteen and had been living in the United States for twenty-two
years. Having made a living as a construction worker, the severe downturn put him
and family in serious financial straits. On Valentine’s day of 2010, Anastasio who
had never had any confrontations with the law, decided to steal a bottle of tequila
and a steak in a desperate attempt at a Valentine’s present for his wife of twenty-one
years. He was arrested and immediately deported. Three months later, he was
caught trying to sneak back across the border to his wife and five children. When he
complained about rough treatment by a border patrol officer, that same officer was
then allowed to take him into the dark pen on his own. Later the officer would claim
Hernandez Rojas was trying to “resist” when in actuality, Hernandez Rojas remained
hogtied with cuffs throughout his ordeal. As the events escalated, at least fourteen
officers became involved in his death.
